An Analysis of the Miami-Dade Economy and Trends in the Financial Markets:
Implications for Miami-Dade Expressway Authority (MDX)- August 2008
The Analysis, prepared for the Board of Directors of the Miami-Dade Expressway Authority, estimated current economic implications facing Miami-Dade County such as growth in retail sales, public sector spending and the current credit crisis that will, in turn, affect MDX’s roadways, toll collection and the entire System. The Report also highlighted the current economic environment in South Florida and the implications for MDX in terms of business planning and the financial environment facing the Authority.
The Economic Impact of the Florida Space Transportation Initiative Project
on the Economy of the State of Florida-April 2008
Space Florida commissioned WEG to study the economic impact of the Florida Space Transportation Initiative (STI) Project on the State of Florida. The Study found that the STI would develop a new orbital space transportation system and would advance not only Florida’s leadership role in space-related activities, but that the development of the system would generate significant economic impacts on employment, labor income and total economic output of the State. Space Florida was created by the Florida Legislature as a public-private partnership responsible for developing and promoting Florida’s position as a global leader in aerospace research, investment, exploration, and commerce.
Employment Impacts of Phased Construction:
University of Miami Life Science Park- July 2008
The Study prepared an analysis of the economic impacts associated with the proposed University of Miami Life Science Park. The Analysis found that as each of the capital projects are completed, and the Life Science Park begins operating, a significant number of permanent jobs will be created in the Park’s laboratories and at spin-off companies that commercialize the scientific advances that are brought to fruition in the Park’s laboratories and its other facilities. Thus, UM’s Life Science Park will positively impact and strengthen the Life Sciences cluster in the State of Florida.
The Comprehensive Economic Development Impacts of Keiser University
on Florida and Selected Communities- April 2008
The impact of Keiser University and its campuses throughout the State of Florida were found to significantly contribute to the educational and economic development of Florida and to the communities in which Keiser serves. The University’s total economic impact on Florida on an annual basis is over half a billion U.S. dollars. These are recurring and quantifiable economic impacts each year, significantly contributing to the standard of living in Florida. The Study also took into consideration the earnings of its growing alumni and the University’s support of over 19,000 jobs in Florida. Keiser University provides the talent and educational excellence necessary to position Florida as a globally competitive State in the 21st Century.
The Economic Impacts of Major Motorsports Operations in Florida-
March 2007
The International Speedway Corporation (ISC) commissioned WEG to analyze the Florida operations of ISC, which includes the Homestead-Miami Speedway and the Daytona International Speedway, along with the headquarters operations of NASCAR and Grand-Am. ISC’s operations have a considerable impact on the State of Florida’s economy, generating significant revenues for business establishments, supporting jobs and labor income. Year-round activities held at ISC facilities in Daytona Beach and Homestead draw hundreds of thousands of visitors annually and generate significant national and international media coverage. WEG has also prepared various economic impact studies on other ISC facilities across the United States such as the Talladega Superspeedway in Alabama, Watkins Glen Speedway in New York and the Kansas Speedway in Kansas.
The Economic Impact of Baptist Health South Florida- May 2006
The primary objective of WEG was to estimate the economic contribution of Baptist Health South Florida to the regional economy of Broward, Miami-Dade and Monroe Counties. Baptist Health is a prime example of the positive economic and social benefits that South Florida enjoys by hosting a world-class healthcare organization. Since the original Study was conducted in 2006, Baptist Health has continued to grow and contribute to jobs created, labor income, value added and tax revenues generated, which were highlighted in WEG’s 2008 Update of the original study.
A Forecasting Model to Estimate Average Changes in Market Values
of Properties in the City of Coral Gables, Florida- July 2007
The City of Coral Gables assigned The Washington Economics Group, Inc. to develop a statistical model for estimating changes in market prices of properties located within the legal boundaries of the Municipality. WEG economists estimated statistically significant changes in the average sale prices for single-family homes, multi-family homes and commercial properties located within the City. Due to significantly increased property values throughout most of Florida and the nation, the City of Coral Gables used this Study to assist in their annual budgeting process.
Estimation and Forecasting of Retail Sales in Florida- July 2008
The goal of the Study prepared on behalf of the Florida Retail Federation was to create an economic forecasting model to estimate retail sales by major retail establishment classification sectors and by geographical regions--Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSA). The Report examined retail sales figures for the period 1990-2006 and developed a model to forecast retail sales by Florida’s major sectors which were: Autos and Accessories, Consumer Durables, Tourism and Recreation, Consumer Non-durables, Building Investment and Business Investment. The comprehensive analysis and forecasting model of retail sales contained in the Study was developed exclusively for Florida Retail Federation members.
The Impact on Socioeconomic Indicators and the Return on Investment
from Public Education in Florida- September 2008
ENLACE- Engaging Latino, African-American and other Communities for Education, engaged WEG to identify the positive contributions of public investment in education to the Florida economy, with attention to the growing number of underserved Floridians. WEG has also been engaged in a communication outreach effort in conjunction with ENLACE in order to educate the residents of the State of Florida on the importance of investing in education. The Special Report will be featured in a Conference in Miami in October 2008.
